What to Monitor After Your Child Falls: A Parent’s Guide

Has your child ever fallen while playing, running, climbing or learning to walk?

Falls are common during childhood. Most falls result in minor injuries, such as a bump, bruise or small cut.

However, some injuries—especially those involving the head—may need medical attention.

Knowing what to look for after a fall can help parents recognise when their child may need further assessment.

If your child appears well and is behaving normally after a minor fall, continue to observe them closely.

What Should You Check After a Fall?

After your child falls, try to stay calm and check how they are responding.

Ask yourself:

🌸 Is my child awake and responding normally?

🌸 Are they behaving as they normally would?

🌸 Can they walk or move normally?

🌸 Is there any bleeding, swelling or bruising?

🌸 Did they hit their head?

🌸 Did they lose consciousness, even briefly?

Signs to Monitor After a Fall

Some symptoms may appear immediately, while others can develop later.

Keep watching your child for changes in their behaviour or physical condition.

1. Vomiting

One episode of vomiting can occur after an injury, but repeated vomiting after a head injury should be taken seriously.

Seek medical advice if your child vomits repeatedly after the fall.

2. Increasing Sleepiness or Difficulty Waking

🌸It is normal for children to become tired during the day or sleep at their usual time.

🌸However, unusual drowsiness, difficulty waking your child or being unable to keep them awake can be a warning sign requiring urgent medical attention.

3. Worsening Headache

🌸A mild headache may occur after a head injury.

🌸However, a headache that becomes increasingly severe or does not go away should be assessed by a healthcare professional.

4. Changes in Behaviour

🌸You know your child’s usual behaviour best.

Pay attention if your child suddenly becomes:

🌸 Confused

🌸 Very irritable

🌸 Unusually restless

🌸 Difficult to comfort

🌸 Less responsive than usual

Changes in behaviour can sometimes occur after a concussion or more serious head injury.

5. Problems With Walking or Coordination

Watch how your child moves after the fall.

Seek medical attention if your child develops:

🌸 Difficulty walking

🌸 Poor balance

🌸 Weakness

🌸 Unusual coordination

These can be signs that require prompt medical assessment.

6. Changes in Vision or Speech

🌸After a head injury, take changes such as blurred or double vision, slurred speech or difficulty speaking seriously.

🌸These symptoms should be assessed promptly.

7. Seizure or Unusual Movements

🌸A seizure after a head injury is an emergency.

🌸Seek emergency medical care immediately if your child has a seizure or uncontrolled shaking following a fall.

8. Blood or Clear Fluid From the Nose or Ears

🌸Blood or clear fluid coming from the nose or ears after a head injury can be a warning sign of a more serious injury.

🌸Your child should receive urgent medical assessment.

What If My Child Seems Fine After the Fall?

🌸If your child has had a minor fall and is alert, responsive and behaving normally, you can continue to observe them.

🌸However, symptoms of concussion may not always appear immediately and can develop over the following hours or days.

🌸 Continue to watch for changes in your child’s behaviour, physical symptoms and usual activities.

🌸 If you are concerned or unsure about your child’s condition, contact a healthcare professional for advice.

What Should Parents Remember?

Most childhood falls do not result in serious injury.

However, it is important to pay attention to your child’s condition after a fall, particularly when the head may have been injured.

🌸 Stay calm and observe your child.

🌸 Watch for changes in behaviour or physical symptoms.

🌸 Do not ignore symptoms that are worsening.

🌸 Seek medical advice if you are concerned.

🌸 Seek emergency care if your child develops serious warning signs.

When in Doubt, Get Your Child Checked

🌸 A fall can be frightening for both children and parents.

🌸  While many falls cause only minor injuries, symptoms following a head injury can sometimes appear later.

🌸 If your child is behaving differently, developing new symptoms or you are worried about their condition, it is best to seek professional medical advice.

🌸 Your child’s safety comes first, and you know your child’s usual behaviour better than anyone.
