When Should You Consider a Psychological Assessment?

Many parents come to us after months — sometimes years — of feeling that something is not quite right, but not knowing where to turn. You do not need a referral letter or a formal diagnosis before reaching out. If you have noticed any of the following, an assessment may help:

  • Frequent tantrums or emotional outbursts that seem out of proportion
  • Difficulty focusing, sitting still, or following instructions
  • Delayed speech or communication challenges
  • Social difficulties — struggles to make friends, overly withdrawn, or difficulty reading social cues
  • Challenges in keeping up in school despite effort
  • Sensitivity to sound, touch, textures, or changes in routine

A psychological assessment does not label your child. It helps you understand your child — and gives schools, therapists, and caregivers the information they need to support them properly.

When to consider a psychological assessment

What We Assess:

  • Our clinical psychologists provide structured evaluations for children and adolescents across a range of concerns:

🔹 ADHD (Attention & Behaviour) Inattention, hyperactivity, impulsivity, and difficulty with self-regulation — assessed using standardised rating scales and clinical observation.

🔹 Autism Spectrum (ASD) Social communication, repetitive behaviour patterns, sensory sensitivities, and social interaction — assessed in line with DSM-5-TR criteria.

🔹 Emotional & Behavioural Concerns: Anxiety, persistent tantrums, emotional dysregulation, low self-esteem, and behavioural challenges at home or in school.

🔹 Learning & Cognitive Development: Cognitive abilities, processing speed, school readiness, and learning difficulties, including dyslexia and developmental delays.

If you are unsure which category your child falls into, that is completely normal — and exactly what our initial session is designed to help clarify.

How the Assessment Works

We keep the process transparent and parent-friendly. Most assessments are completed across two to three sessions.

Step 1: Initial Parent Interview: We begin by speaking with you — understanding your concerns, your child’s history, and what you are hoping to learn. This shapes the assessment approach we use.

Step 2: Assessment Sessions: Your child meets with our clinical psychologist for structured, age-appropriate activities and standardised testing. Sessions are designed to be calm and non-threatening

Step 3: Report & Feedback Session: Once the assessment is complete, we prepare a detailed written report and walk you through the findings in a dedicated feedback session. We explain everything clearly — no confusing jargon — and give you a concrete plan for next steps.

👉 You will leave knowing exactly what is going on with your child, and exactly what to do about it.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. How long does the full assessment take?

Most assessments involve two to three sessions of one to two hours each, spread over one to two weeks. The total duration depends on your child’s age and the scope of assessment.

2.What age do you assess?

We assess children from age 3 through to adolescence (17 years). Some tools and approaches differ by age group — we will tailor the assessment accordingly.

3.Will my child receive a diagnosis?

A diagnosis is given where the clinical evidence supports it. Not every assessment results in a diagnosis — sometimes the findings reveal a different type of challenge that does not meet full diagnostic criteria, but is still highly actionable.

4.Do I need a referral letter?

No referral is required. You can contact us directly to book.

5.Is your report accepted by schools?

Yes. Our reports are structured to meet the documentation requirements of Malaysian mainstream schools, PPKI programmes, and private therapy providers.
