Cognitive / IQ Assessment
We provide cognitive (IQ) assessments for a range of purposes, including educational planning, giftedness identification, learning concerns, and school applications.
Cognitive assessments are often considered high-stakes, as results may influence admission into specific schools or programmes. Because many factors can affect a child’s performance on the day of testing, we take care to ensure results reflect your child’s true abilities as accurately as possible.
We support this process by:
- Gathering background information from parents before the assessment
- Preparing strategies to help motivate and engage your child
- Providing an introductory letter with the psychologist’s photo and greeting before the session
- Building rapport with your child before formal testing begins
- Presenting tasks as interactive activities where appropriate to reduce anxiety
- Offering encouragement and positive reinforcement throughout the session
- Allowing sufficient breaks, especially if signs of fatigue arise
- Conducting testing over more than one session when needed
Preparation for Assessment
No specific studying or preparation is required. The best way to help your child perform well is to ensure they are rested, comfortable, and relaxed.
We recommend:
- Ensuring a good night’s sleep before the assessment
- Having a healthy, light meal beforehand
- Avoiding pressure and simply encouraging your child to do their best
- Bringing a water bottle and light snack
Assessment Tools We Use
We utilise a range of well-established, standardised cognitive assessment tools, including:
- Wechsler Preschool and Primary Scale of Intelligence – Fourth Edition (WPPSI-IV)
For children aged 2 to 7 years - Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children – Fifth Edition (WISC-V)
For children and adolescents aged 6 to 16 years - Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale – Fourth Edition (WAIS-IV)
